Technology and tracking

AI (artificial intelligence)

Also called artificial intelligence, generative AI, language model, LLM.

Short answer

AI (artificial intelligence) refers to systems that solve tasks such as understanding text, classification and prediction from data rather than fixed rules. In affiliate marketing, AI is mainly used for content production, data analysis and as a new traffic source through AI answer engines.

Definition of AI (artificial intelligence).

In practice, AI covers language models, classification models and recommendation systems that are trained on data instead of being programmed with rules. The model learns patterns from examples and applies them to new input. That makes it strong at tasks with many variations – and unreliable at tasks where a wrong answer must not slip through.

In affiliate marketing, AI shows up in three places. On the content side, language models are used for drafts, translation and structure. On the analysis side, models group traffic, predict churn and prioritise products. And the traffic side has gained a new channel: AI answer engines that answer questions directly and cite sources instead of delivering ten blue links.

That last change matters most to affiliates. When the answer is delivered without a click, value moves from ranking in the search results to being cited in the answer itself. Content that is meant to be cited has to be concrete, name numbers and units, and be able to stand alone in a single paragraph.

What AI cannot do in an affiliate setup

A language model cannot decide whether a conversion is genuine. Attribution is accounting, not estimation: either the order carries a click ID or it does not. Models that estimate missing sales produce numbers that cannot be verified – and numbers that cannot be verified have no place in a payment agreement.

Language models also produce plausible numbers with nothing behind them. If AI is used for product write-ups, prices, specifications and test results must be checked against the source before publishing. Misleading information about a product is not only a credibility problem but also a marketing law problem.

How it goes wrong

  • 01

    AI text without fact-checking

Models invent specifications, prices and studies that sound right. If they are published unchanged on a product page, the publisher alone is responsible for the claims.

  • 02

AI as the explanation for fluctuating numbers

A changed algorithm is rarely the explanation for a drop in sales. First check whether tracking works, whether the link still carries its ID, and whether a program has changed its rate.

Frequently asked questions

Can you use AI to write affiliate content?

Yes, but only as a draft. The model does not know the product, and it states unsupported numbers convincingly. Everything that can be verified – price, specification, test result – must be checked against the source before the text is published.

Will AI answers replace search engines as a traffic source for affiliates?

They complement them. AI answer engines answer more questions without sending a click onwards, but they also cite sources. Content that is concrete, names numbers and can be read paragraph by paragraph has a better chance of being cited than general coverage.

Can AI improve an affiliate's conversion rate?

Indirectly. AI can produce more variants of copy and landing pages, which are then tested against each other. The improvement itself comes from the test, not the model – without measurement you do not know whether the variant was better.
