Clawback
Also called commission clawback, commission reversal, chargeback of commission, reversal.
Short answer
Clawback is the reversal of a commission that has already been approved or paid out, because the sale later falls through – through a return, cancellation, chargeback or fraud discovered afterwards. The amount is usually deducted from the affiliate's next settlement.
Definition of Clawback.
Mechanically, a clawback is a negative entry. The commission has passed approval and counts towards the affiliate's balance, but the program later posts an offsetting line that deducts the amount again. The affiliate sees it as a deduction in a period where the sale itself no longer appears.
The need arises because an approval period never covers everything. Return rights are predictable and can be built into the period. Chargebacks, cancelled subscriptions, leads that turn out to be invalid and fraud uncovered after a review typically arrive later, and those are the cases a clawback clause is written for.
A clawback clause is only as good as its wording. It must be in the program terms before the affiliate starts working, it must name the situations that trigger it, and it must have a final deadline. Without a deadline no commission is ever final, which makes the whole program hard to model for anyone who buys traffic.
Clawback vs. rejection
| Aspect | Clawback | Rejection |
|---|---|---|
| Timing | after approval or payout | while the commission is still pending |
| Effect on the balance | deducted from a future settlement | the amount never reaches the balance |
| What the affiliate sees | a negative entry in a later period | a sale whose status changes to rejected |
| What it requires | a clause in the program terms | a reason given within the rejection window |
Rejection is the clean solution when the sale falls through before approval; clawback is the exception for what only comes to light afterwards.
How it goes wrong
- 01
Clawback with no time limit
A clause that allows reversal without a time limit makes all earnings provisional. Set a final deadline, ideally tied to the return period and the dispute deadline, so the affiliate knows when a commission is final.
- 02
Offsetting against an empty balance
If the affiliate has no future earnings in the program, there is nothing to offset against. The clawback then becomes a monetary claim, which requires an entirely different process from an entry in a dashboard.
- 03
The entry cannot be verified
A negative line without an order ID and a reason is impossible for the affiliate to check. It is the most common source of disputes over clawbacks, and it is purely a matter of documentation.
At Affilyflow
Clawback in practice
Affilyflow is built on rejection rather than after-the-fact reversal. The store has the program's approval period (30–90 days) to reject a conversion, after which the sale is approved automatically. A rejection requires a reason the affiliate can read, and a conversion never credits a balance automatically – everything is created as pending. The only automatic reversal happens via the WooCommerce plugin and Stripe: if a WooCommerce order is refunded or cancelled, or a Stripe payment is refunded or disputed, the commission is rejected automatically – even if the sale had already been approved – and the affiliate is notified; a partial refund reduces it in proportion instead. If the commission has already been paid out, it is offset against the next payout, but only if the sale was approved less than 90 days ago; after that the affiliate keeps the commission and Affilyflow covers the difference. Refunds via the Shopify app and script-based tracking require the store to reject the sale itself within the window.
Frequently asked questions
What does clawback mean in affiliate marketing?
A clawback is the reversal of a commission the affiliate has already had approved or paid out. It is used when the sale falls through afterwards – through a return, cancellation, chargeback or fraud. The amount is usually deducted from the affiliate's next settlement.
What is the difference between a clawback and a commission delay?
A commission delay postpones approval, so a sale that falls through is caught before the money becomes the affiliate's. A clawback takes back an amount after it has been approved. An approval period that is long enough removes the need for most clawbacks.
Can a program claw back a commission without notice?
The basis must be in the program terms the affiliate has accepted, and the clause must be precise enough to be checked: which situations trigger it, and within what deadline. If nothing is written down, there is nothing to support a reversal. If you are in doubt about a specific clause, that is a question of contract law.
How can an affiliate avoid clawbacks?
Look at the approval period, the return policy and any clawback clause before you scale a channel. Products with high return rates, subscriptions with free trials and lead offers without quality requirements are the three places where reversals arise. Keep documentation of where your traffic came from.
