Lead
Also called prospect, sign-up.
Short answer
A lead is a person who has shown concrete interest in a product by leaving contact details, booking a meeting or creating an account – without necessarily buying anything. In affiliate marketing the lead is the conversion that triggers commission in CPL (cost per lead) programs.
Definition of Lead.
A lead is a prospect made concrete: a completed form, a newsletter sign-up, a booked test drive, a created account or a request for a quote. Not a penny has been spent yet – the value lies in the opportunity. The advertiser pays for the chance to turn the prospect into a customer through follow-up sales, emails or advice. In B2B, leads are often graded by maturity – from a cold sign-up to a sales-ready prospect – but in affiliate settlement only the definition the program itself has set counts.
In affiliate marketing, leads are paid in CPL programs at a fixed amount per approved lead. The model dominates in industries with a long sales process and high value per customer: insurance, loans, energy contracts, B2B software and car sales. A car dealer might pay DKK 100 for every test drive booked through an affiliate link – if the person later buys the car, the lead was still the action that triggered the commission, not the sale.
Quality decides whether the model holds. Advertisers validate leads before approving them: a valid phone number, no duplicates, genuine interest. The program terms define exactly what counts – a newsletter sign-up and a completed loan application are both leads, but very different in value. Incentivised traffic, where people fill in forms to get a reward, produces leads that look fine in the statistics and never become customers.
Lead vs. sale
| Aspect | Lead | Sale |
|---|---|---|
| The action | contact details or sign-up submitted | payment completed |
| Settlement | CPL – a fixed amount per lead | CPS – usually a percentage of the order value |
| The advertiser's risk | higher – the lead may never become a customer | lower – the revenue is already in |
| Validation | quality check of details and intent | check against cancellation and refund |
A lead is paid for the opportunity, a sale for the result – which is why the lead rate is a fixed amount, set according to the risk that the lead never becomes a customer.
How it goes wrong
- 01
Unclear lead definition
If the program only says commission per lead, conflict is built in. Read the program terms: does a sign-up without a confirmed email count? Must the phone number be valid? An affiliate who promotes on a wrong assumption gets rejected leads and wasted traffic.
- 02
Incentivised leads
Reward people for filling in forms – points, gifts, access to content – and you get lots of leads with no real interest. They are rejected at validation, and systematically delivering junk leads can cost access to the program.
- 03
Duplicates
The same person signing up twice is one lead – advertisers filter out duplicates on email or phone number. So never count raw form submissions as earnings; it is the approved leads that turn into commission.
Frequently asked questions
What counts as a lead in an affiliate program?
The program terms define it – typically a completed form with valid contact details, an account sign-up or a booked appointment. Read the definition before you promote, because 2 programs in the same industry can pay out very different actions as a lead.
How much commission do you get per lead?
CPL rates are fixed amounts that the advertiser sets based on what a lead is worth in the subsequent sales process. A newsletter lead might pay a small amount, while a qualified loan or insurance application can trigger several hundred kroner. Behind the rate lies a calculation: the share of leads that become customers times the customer's value.
Why are my leads rejected?
The most common reasons are invalid details, duplicates, the action not meeting the program's lead definition, or incentivised traffic. A rejection should come with a reason – use it to adjust where and how you promote.
Is a lead the same as a conversion?
A lead is a type of conversion. Conversion is the umbrella term for the action a program pays for – it can be a sale, a lead or an app install. In CPL programs, the lead is the conversion.
