Roles and players
Niche site
Also called niche site, niche website, affiliate site.
Short answer
A niche site is a website dedicated to a narrow topic – for example air purifiers or espresso machines – that makes money from affiliate links in tests, guides and comparisons. Traffic usually comes from search engines, and the income is commission from the stores the site links to.
Definition of Niche site.
The model is simple: choose a topic with buying intent, write content that ranks for searches such as 'best robot vacuum' or comparisons of two products, and link to the stores with affiliate links. When a reader clicks and buys, the site earns commission. A niche site differs from a broad magazine by covering one topic in depth – and depth is what builds topical authority in the eyes of search engines.
The economics are traffic times click rate to the store times conversion rate times commission. A site with 10,000 monthly visits, where 20 % click through and 3 % of those buy for DKK 800 at 8 % commission, earns DKK 3,840 in commission a month. The calculation shows why keywords with buying intent decide everything: commercial traffic converts many times better than informational searches.
The time horizon is long. A new domain typically needs 6–12 months to build rankings, and income arrives unevenly: the first months bring in almost nothing, after which the curve can turn sharply upwards. The risk is concentrated in one channel – Google's core updates and AI Overviews in the search results can shift the traffic base without the site itself having changed anything.
What sets the sites that survive apart
Search engine quality updates have hit thin affiliate sites hard – pages that merely rewrite product descriptions and rank products the author has never touched. The countermove is documented first-hand experience: own photos, measurements and real tests, clear author profiles and recommendations that dare to rule products out. It is also the kind of content AI answer engines cite rather than generic lists.
The rules apply to niche sites too
Affiliate links are commercial and must be disclosed, so the reader is in no doubt that the site receives commission – and the links should carry rel="sponsored", so search engines can see the commercial relationship. When income becomes regular, questions of business registration, VAT and tax follow, as for any other business.
How it goes wrong
- 01
Content without first-hand experience
Product lists written from data sheets are exactly what quality updates filter out. Without own tests, photos and measurements, the site competes on what everyone else has too.
- 02
One channel, one program
A niche site where all traffic comes from Google and all income from one program has two single points of failure. Spread income across several programs, and build an email list or other channels before it becomes urgent.
- 03
Counting visits instead of money
10,000 visits from informational searches can earn less than 500 visits from 'best X' searches. Measure EPC per article – not traffic – when deciding what to write next.
At Affilyflow
Niche site in practice
A niche site signs up as an affiliate and gets links per program – with deep links straight to the products an article covers. The program overview shows public metrics, but only above a minimum threshold of 25 clicks and 3 sales, so the figures rest on real data. The affiliate gets exactly the rate the program shows – the network fee is part of the store's total price.
Frequently asked questions
What is a niche site?
A niche site is a website that covers a narrow topic in depth – for example e-bikes or coffee gear – and makes money from affiliate commission on links in tests, guides and comparisons. Traffic usually comes from search engines, and the content targets searches with buying intent.
How long does it take before a niche site makes money?
Expect 6–12 months before a new domain ranks for keywords that matter, and longer before the income is stable. The curve is uneven: the first months bring in almost nothing. Competition in the niche, the domain's history and the quality of the content decide how quickly it turns.
Can you still make a living from niche sites when AI answers searches?
It has become harder for purely informational articles, because AI Overviews answer the question directly in the search results. Commercial searches, own tests and first-hand data stand stronger – that kind of content is still cited and visited. Thin list sites are the most exposed, and spreading across several channels and programs has become more important.
Does a niche site have to disclose affiliate links?
Yes. Affiliate links are commercial, and the site must clearly state that it receives commission – in Denmark this follows from the Marketing Practices Act's advertising disclosure requirement. Technically, the links should carry rel="sponsored", so search engines can see the commercial relationship.
