Roles and players
SEO affiliate
Also called organic affiliate, niche site owner, content SEO.
Short answer
An SEO affiliate is an affiliate who gets their traffic from organic search results instead of paid ads. The model is built on content – reviews, comparisons and guides – that ranks in Google and sends purchase-ready visitors on through affiliate links.
Definition of SEO affiliate.
The SEO affiliate invests time and content where the PPC affiliate invests ad money. The work consists of finding keywords with buying intent, producing content that ranks for them, and placing affiliate links where the reader is ready to act. The traffic costs nothing per click – the cost lies in production and in the wait before the rankings arrive.
The economics of the SEO affiliate model are a long start-up and a low marginal cost. A new site often takes 6–12 months to reach rankings that bring stable traffic, but once the content ranks, the earnings continue with limited maintenance. The risk is concentrated in one place: an algorithm update can move traffic significantly – in either direction – without warning.
The form ranges from niche sites with 20–50 articles on one topic to authority sites and price comparisons. What they share is that the content answers searches such as 'best X', 'X vs Y' and 'X review', and that the income comes from commission per sale or lead – not from ad impressions.
What decides success as an SEO affiliate
Keyword choice weighs more than the amount of text. 1 article on a keyword with buying intent and manageable competition beats 10 articles on informational keywords. A keyword is assessed on 3 things: the intent behind the search, the competitors' authority and the commission a click can realistically turn into – EPC reveals afterwards whether the calculation held.
SEO affiliate vs. PPC affiliate
| Aspect | SEO affiliate | PPC affiliate |
|---|---|---|
| Traffic source | organic rankings in search engines | paid ads, charged per click |
| Investment | time, content and technology | ad budget and ongoing optimisation |
| Pace | months before the traffic arrives | traffic the same day the campaign starts |
| Biggest risk | algorithm updates | rising click prices and rejected ads |
SEO pays with time, PPC with money – the choice depends on capital, patience and how quickly an offer needs to be tested.
How it goes wrong
- 01
Traffic that does not convert
Rankings on informational keywords bring visitor numbers, not commission. Without buying intent in the search, the click rate on affiliate links is low, and EPC reveals the problem quickly.
- 02
The whole business in one channel
When all traffic comes from Google, one core update is enough to wipe out the income base. An email list and direct traffic are cheap insurance.
- 03
The content is allowed to go out of date
Reviews with discontinued products and old prices lose rankings and trust. Maintaining the 10 best-earning articles almost always beats producing article number 100.
At Affilyflow
SEO affiliate in practice
SEO affiliates choose programs on data. On Affilyflow the program overview shows public metrics for a program once at least 25 clicks and 3 sales have been recorded – below that threshold the figures are not shown, so small samples do not look like statistics. The commission is locked at the moment of the click: rate and type are copied to the click row, so a click is settled on the terms that applied when the reader clicked.
Frequently asked questions
How long does it take to make money as an SEO affiliate?
Expect 6–12 months before a new site has rankings that bring stable income. The first commissions can come earlier, but volume requires several articles to rank in the top 3 for keywords with buying intent.
What does it cost to start as an SEO affiliate?
The start-up costs are low: a domain costs around DKK 100 a year, and hosting is available from about DKK 30 a month. The real investment is the working hours in the content – and possibly SEO tools from a few hundred kroner a month.
Should I choose a niche as an SEO affiliate?
Yes, in practice. A narrow topic makes it possible to build topical authority, which search engines reward, and keeps the keyword work manageable. Broad sites require far more resources before they rank for anything.
Can you run an SEO affiliate site with AI-written content?
Production can be faster with AI, but search engines assess the content's quality and originality, not its origin. Text without first-hand experience, tests or data competes poorly on keywords close to purchase, where there is already a lot of content.
