Roles and players

PPC affiliate

Also called PPC affiliate, paid media affiliate, media buyer, SEM affiliate.

Short answer

A PPC affiliate is an affiliate who buys their traffic through paid ads – for example Google Ads or Meta – and earns the difference between the ad price per click and the commission the clicks generate. The model is also called media buying and requires an ongoing ad budget.

Definition of PPC affiliate.

The business model is arbitrage: the PPC affiliate pays a price per click (CPC) to the ad platform and earns commission when the clicks convert. Two numbers decide the calculation – if a click costs DKK 2 and the affiliate earns DKK 3 per click in commission (EPC), the margin is DKK 1 per click. If EPC falls below CPC, the campaign loses money by the hour.

The toolbox is search ads on buying-ready keywords, shopping ads, native ads and paid posts on social media. Traffic is sent either to the affiliate's own landing page, which warms up the user, or straight to the advertiser (direct linking). Negative keywords filter out people searching for freebies, and sub-IDs on the links show which keywords and ads actually make money.

The model is the fastest route to volume – the ads can run the same day – but also the most rule-bound. Program terms decide whether paid search traffic is allowed, and brand bidding on the advertiser's own name is one of the most frequently banned practices. Breaches cost rejected commissions or exclusion from the program.

PPC buys results now for ongoing costs – SEO slowly builds an asset. Mature affiliates often run both and let PPC test what SEO should build.

How it goes wrong

  • 01

    Brand bidding without permission

Bidding on the advertiser's own name is banned in many programs and the fastest route to exclusion. Read the program terms before the campaign goes live, and add the advertiser's name as a negative keyword if required.

  • 02

The approval rate eats the margin

Clicks are paid for immediately, but commission is only approved weeks later. If you count on 100 % approval and the program lands at 80 %, your real EPC falls by 20 % – enough to turn a profit into a loss.

  • 03

    No measurement per keyword

Without sub-IDs on the links you only see the campaign's totals. One keyword can carry the whole profit while ten others burn through the budget. Tag each keyword or ad set in the link so the losers can be switched off one by one.

At Affilyflow

PPC affiliate in practice

If you buy traffic, the economics must hold from click to payout. At Affilyflow the commission rate and type are locked at the moment of the click, and the attribution window is locked at the same time and decided on the server – a later rate change does not affect clicks you have already paid for. Every tracking event is logged, including those that did not become a sale, so you can reconcile against your own figures.

The store has the program's approval period (30–90 days) to reject a sale – after that it is approved automatically, and a rejection requires a reason you can read. That makes the approval rate something that can be verified, not guessed.

Frequently asked questions

What is a PPC affiliate?

An affiliate who gets their traffic through paid ads instead of organic content. The earnings are the difference between the price per click and the commission the clicks generate. The model requires an ongoing ad budget and close monitoring of the numbers.

Can you make money with Google Ads as an affiliate?

Yes, when your EPC is higher than your CPC and the program allows paid search traffic. The margin lies in keyword choice: buying-ready searches convert best. Always check the program's rules for paid traffic and brand bidding before you start the campaign.

How big a budget do you need to start as a PPC affiliate?

Enough to buy data before you judge the campaign – as a rule of thumb a few hundred clicks per campaign before the conversion rate can be interpreted. With a CPC of DKK 2, that is a test budget in the order of DKK 400–1,000 per campaign, not per month.

What is the difference between a PPC affiliate and an SEO affiliate?

The PPC affiliate buys traffic with ads and gets results the same day, but pays for every click. The SEO affiliate builds organic rankings over months and then gets traffic with no click price. PPC scales quickly in both directions – SEO is slower to build and cheaper to run.
