Payment and models
RevShare (revenue share)
Also called revenue share, revshare, lifetime commission.
Short answer
RevShare (revenue share) is a commission model in which the affiliate gets a fixed percentage of the revenue a referred customer generates – either per order or on an ongoing basis over the customer's lifetime. The model is used above all in subscription services, SaaS and iGaming.
Definition of RevShare (revenue share).
RevShare means sharing revenue: the store gives up an agreed percentage of what the referred customer pays. The model comes in two versions. One-time revshare gives commission on the individual order – in practice the same as CPS with a percentage rate. Ongoing revshare gives commission on every payment the customer makes from then on, and that is the version the term most often refers to.
Ongoing revshare shifts the focus from orders to customers. A referred subscriber who pays DKK 200 a month at 25 % revshare is worth DKK 50 every month – DKK 600 a year if the customer stays. The model's value therefore depends directly on the customer's lifetime: low churn makes revshare a growing, predictable income, while high churn can make it worth less than a solid one-time commission.
The rate is agreed in the program terms and varies considerably from program to program – lower in industries with thin margins, higher where lifetime value is high. Read three things in particular in the terms: whether there is a cap on how long or how much is shared (recurring cap), what happens to ongoing agreements when the rate changes, and whether it is calculated on the whole payment or only part of it – for example excluding VAT.
How it is calculated
RevShare commission = customer's payment × revshare rate
- customer's payment
- the amount the referred customer pays in the period that the program calculates commission on
- revshare rate
- the percentage agreed in the program terms
Example
- Monthly subscription
- DKK 200
- Revshare rate
- 25 %
- Commission per month
- DKK 50
The figure is your monthly income per active customer – multiplied by the number of active customers and their expected lifetime, it gives the value of your whole revshare portfolio.
RevShare vs. CPS
| Aspect | RevShare | CPS |
|---|---|---|
| Triggered by | every payment from the referred customer | the individual order |
| Paid out | on an ongoing basis, as long as the customer pays | once per sale |
| The value depends on | the customer's lifetime and churn | order value and conversion rate |
| Most often seen in | subscriptions, SaaS, iGaming | web shops with one-off purchases |
Think CPS for one-off purchases and revshare when the customer pays again and again – and always calculate rate times expected lifetime before choosing revshare over a high one-time rate.
How it goes wrong
- 01
Lifetime is rarely lifetime
Programs can cap ongoing commission – a number of months or a maximum amount per customer. Check whether there is a recurring cap before counting on income forever.
- 02
Churn eats the calculation
A revshare of 40 % sounds better than 25 %, but if customers leave the service after 2 months, a high one-time commission easily beats it. Calculate rate × expected lifetime, not the rate alone.
- 03
Rate changes hit the portfolio
Find out what the program does with customers already referred when the rate changes. If it is not in the terms, you do not know whether the portfolio you have built is protected.
At Affilyflow
RevShare (revenue share) in practice
On Affilyflow the commission rate and type are locked at the moment of the click – they are copied to the click row itself. An ongoing recurring agreement cannot be cut afterwards: customers you have already referred keep being settled on the terms that applied at the click. The affiliate gets exactly the rate the program shows – the network's fee is 20 % of the store's total price, and the affiliate gets the 80 %.
Frequently asked questions
What does revshare mean in affiliate marketing?
RevShare is a commission model in which the affiliate gets a percentage of the revenue a referred customer generates. In subscription services it means commission on every payment the customer makes, not only the first.
What is the difference between revshare and CPS?
CPS pays commission once per order. RevShare shares revenue on an ongoing basis for as long as the customer pays. A CPS commission is known in advance, while the value of revshare depends on how long the customer stays.
How long do you receive revshare commission?
The program terms decide. Some programs share revenue for the customer's whole lifetime, others set a cap of a number of months or a maximum amount per customer. Read the terms before you calculate the value.
Is revshare better than a fixed commission per sale?
It depends on the customers' lifetime. If the customer pays for many months, ongoing revshare quickly overtakes a one-time commission. With high churn or pure one-off purchases, a fixed rate per sale is usually worth more.
