Tiered commission
Also called tiered commission, commission tiers, commission ladder.
Short answer
Tiered commission is a commission model in which the rate rises when the affiliate reaches set targets – for example 8 % up to 50 sales a month and 10 % above that. The model rewards volume and gives strong affiliates a reason to prioritise the program.
Definition of Tiered commission.
A commission ladder is defined by 3 things: the thresholds (for example 25 and 50 sales), the period they are measured over (typically per calendar month) and the rate at each tier. The target can be the number of sales or revenue – revenue thresholds favour affiliates with high order values, sales thresholds favour volume.
There are 2 variants, and the difference decides the payout. In the retroactive model, the highest rate reached applies to all sales in the period. In the marginal model – the same principle as tax brackets – only the sales above the threshold get the higher rate. The program terms must say clearly which model applies; it is a classic source of disagreement about ladders.
For the store, the ladder is a way to differentiate without negotiating individual deals: the base rate protects the margin on the many small affiliates, the top rate competes for the few big ones who drive most of the revenue. For the affiliate, it is an argument for concentrating their traffic in one place instead of spreading it.
Worked example: retroactive vs. marginal
An affiliate creates 60 sales of DKK 500 each in order value excluding VAT in a month. The ladder: 8 % up to 50 sales, 10 % above. Retroactive: 60 × DKK 500 × 10 % = DKK 3,000. Marginal: 50 × DKK 500 × 8 % plus 10 × DKK 500 × 10 % = DKK 2,000 plus DKK 500 = DKK 2,500. The difference of DKK 500 – 20 % of the lower payout – lies entirely in the interpretation.
Tiered commission vs. two-tier program
| Aspect | Tiered commission | Two-tier program |
|---|---|---|
| What is rewarded | your own sales volume | recruiting other affiliates |
| What rises | the rate on your own sales | nothing – you get a share of the recruits' sales |
| The levels are | commission tiers with thresholds | links in a referral chain |
| Appears in the terms as | a rate table with thresholds and period | a second-tier or override rate |
Tiered commission is about how much you sell yourself – two-tier is about whom you have recruited. The similar names are the whole confusion.
How it goes wrong
- 01
The model is not in the terms
Retroactive or marginal can change the payout by double-digit percentages, and if the word is missing from the program terms, the disagreement is only discovered at settlement. Insist on one wording in writing before the ladder takes effect.
- 02
Thresholds detached from reality
A tier at 500 sales a month in a program where the top affiliate creates 80 motivates no one. Set the thresholds from the actual volumes – the first tier should be reachable by more than one affiliate.
- 03
Monthly resets steer behaviour
If the ladder resets every month, effort concentrates in the last week of the month, and an affiliate just below the threshold 2 months running earns less than one with the same total volume unevenly spread. Choose the period according to the behaviour the program wants to reward.
At Affilyflow
Tiered commission in practice
Affilyflow does not automate commission ladders – a store that wants to reward volume raises the rate in its program itself, and the new rate applies to subsequent clicks. Every click locks rate and type at the moment of the click, so a rate change never reinterprets clicks that have already happened: the affiliate knows at the click what a sale will trigger.
Frequently asked questions
What is tiered commission in affiliate marketing?
Tiered commission is a model in which the commission rate rises at set thresholds – for example 8 % up to 50 sales a month and 10 % above. The thresholds can be measured in number of sales or revenue, and the period is typically a calendar month.
Does the higher rate apply to all sales or only to sales above the threshold?
It depends on the program. In the retroactive model, the top rate applies to all sales in the period once the threshold is reached; in the marginal model, only to the sales above the threshold. With 60 sales of DKK 500 and a ladder of 8 and 10 %, the difference is DKK 500 – always check the program terms.
Is tiered commission the same as a two-tier program?
No. Tiered commission raises your own rate when your volume reaches a threshold. A two-tier program gives you a share of the sales created by affiliates you have recruited. One is about volume, the other about recruitment.
When does a commission ladder make sense for a store?
When a few affiliates drive most of the sales and the store wants to keep them without raising the rate for everyone. The base rate protects the margin on the small ones, the top rate competes for the big ones – and the thresholds should be set from the program's actual volumes.
