Two-tier program
Also called two-tier affiliate program, second-tier commission, override commission.
Short answer
A two-tier program is an affiliate program with 2 layers of commission: the affiliate earns normal commission on their own sales and, in addition, a smaller share of the sales created by affiliates they have recruited to the program themselves.
Definition of Two-tier program.
The mechanics have 2 layers. The first layer is ordinary commission: the affiliate sends customers and gets the program's rate on their purchases. The second layer is triggered by recruitment: if a new affiliate signs up through the existing one's referral link, the relationship is recorded, and from then on the recruit's sales trigger an extra share – a second-tier or override commission – for the person who recruited them.
The basis of calculation varies from program to program: some pay a percentage of the recruit's commission (for example 10 % of their earnings), others a separate rate on the recruit's sales (for example 2 % of the order value). The terms must also decide whether the share runs indefinitely, for a limited period – for example 12 months – or up to a cap.
The line to pyramid structures is sharp: a two-tier program stops at 2 levels and only pays for real sales to real customers. Structures with many levels, where earnings come mainly from recruiting new participants rather than from selling, are a different – and legally exposed – category. That is exactly why serious programs keep the second layer small and make it conditional on documented sales activity.
Two-tier program vs. referral bonus
| Aspect | Two-tier program | Referral bonus |
|---|---|---|
| Payout | an ongoing share of the recruit's sales | a one-off amount per recruited affiliate |
| Rewards | recruiting affiliates who keep selling | the recruitment itself |
| Depends on the recruit's performance | yes – all the value lies there | no, or only via an activity requirement |
| Duration | indefinite, a period or a cap – according to the terms | finished at payout |
A referral bonus is a one-off amount for recruiting – a two-tier program turns recruitment into an ongoing source of income.
How it goes wrong
- 01
Override paid from the recruit's rate
If the second layer is funded by deducting from the recruit's commission, new affiliates soon notice – and sign up without the referral link. For recruitment to work, the share must be added on top, not taken from the recruit.
- 02
Self-recruitment
Two accounts – one that recruits, one that sells – give override on your own sales. Programs have to match identities, payment details and behaviour to catch the construction, and the terms must make it grounds for exclusion.
- 03
Recruitment without quality
If recruitment is measured on numbers alone, the second layer attracts sign-ups without traffic. The value of a two-tier program stands or falls on the recruits actually selling – dead accounts trigger nothing.
At Affilyflow
Two-tier program in practice
Affilyflow is not a two-tier program. Instead we have a referral scheme: if you recruit another affiliate, Affilyflow pays the bonus – the recruited affiliate keeps their full commission, and no commission is moved between the levels.
Frequently asked questions
What is a two-tier affiliate program?
A two-tier program is an affiliate program with 2 layers of commission: normal commission on your own sales plus a smaller, ongoing share of the sales created by affiliates you have recruited to the program yourself. The share is often called second-tier or override commission.
Is a two-tier program the same as MLM?
No. A two-tier program stops at 2 levels and only pays for real sales. MLM and pyramid-like structures run across many levels, and earnings come largely from recruiting new participants – that is both a different mechanism and a different legal category.
How much do you earn on the second level of a two-tier program?
The basis varies: some programs pay a percentage of the recruit's commission, for example 10 % of their earnings, others a separate rate on the recruit's sales, for example 2 % of the order value. The terms also decide whether the share runs indefinitely or for a limited period.
Does Affilyflow have a two-tier program?
No. Affilyflow uses a referral model instead: if you recruit another affiliate, a bonus is paid that Affilyflow pays itself. The recruited affiliate keeps all of their own commission – no commission is moved between the levels.
