Traffic and channels

Referral

Also called referral, referred customer, referral traffic.

Short answer

A referral is a visitor, lead or customer sent on to a store by another party – in affiliate marketing via a trackable affiliate link. The word is also used for referring new affiliates to a network.

Definition of Referral.

A referral is the basic transaction in affiliate marketing: one party sends a potential customer on to a store and is credited for it, because the click can be tracked. The referred visitor is called a referral, and if the visit becomes a purchase, the referral has become a conversion that triggers commission.

The word covers 3 related things. In web analytics, referral traffic is every visit that arrives with another website as the sender – measured on the HTTP referrer, with no agreement behind it. In affiliate marketing, a referral is a visitor or customer referred via a trackable affiliate link. And in recruitment, referral means referring new affiliates or stores to a network, often in return for a referral bonus.

The difference between an analytics referral and an affiliate referral is traceability. Analytics groups by sending domain and can neither settle nor attribute a sale to a specific partner. The affiliate referral carries a click ID, so the sale can be settled precisely. The 2 numbers rarely match: an affiliate referral can show up as direct in analytics if the referrer header is missing, while an ordinary link counts as referral without triggering any commission.

How a referral is tracked

An affiliate referral starts with a click on an affiliate link. The click is recorded on the network's server and given a click ID, after which the user is sent on to the store. If the user buys within the attribution window, the conversion carries the click ID back to the network – and the referral can be settled to exactly the affiliate who sent it.

The chain makes the referral a legal and financial unit, not just a statistical phenomenon. That is why affiliate referrals require trackable links: without a click ID there is no way to link the sale to the sender – whatever the analytics tool shows.

How it goes wrong

  • 01

The analytics channel mistaken for affiliate traffic

Referral in web analytics covers every referring domain – press coverage, forums, links from partners. A domain listed under referral does not mean there is an affiliate agreement or that commission is owed.

  • 02

A referral mistaken for a conversion

A referral is traffic, not income. Commission requires the referral to convert within the attribution window – and the sale to be approved afterwards. Many referrals and few sales is a conversion problem, not a traffic problem.

  • 03

    Self-referral

Buying through your own affiliate link is called self-referral and is regulated in program terms. It is easy to detect – the same person behind the click and the purchase – and can cost both the commission and access to the program.

At Affilyflow

Referral in practice

Affilyflow has a built-in referral program: if you refer new users to the network, the referral bonus is paid by us – the recruited affiliate keeps their full commission. The bonus is therefore not a deduction from the referred person's earnings.

Frequently asked questions

What does referral mean in affiliate marketing?

A referral is a referred visitor, lead or customer that an affiliate has sent on to a store via a trackable link. The word is also used for referring new affiliates or stores to a network in return for a referral bonus.

What is the difference between referral traffic and affiliate traffic?

Referral traffic in web analytics is every visit that arrives with another website as the sender, whatever the agreement. Affiliate traffic is referrals via trackable affiliate links with a click ID, so sales can be attributed and settled. The two numbers measure different things and rarely match.

What is a referral program?

A referral program rewards existing users for referring new ones – for example an affiliate who refers another affiliate or a store to a network. The reward is a referral bonus, which is separate from the commission on ordinary sales.

Does a referral count as a sale?

No. A referral is a visit or a lead. Commission is only triggered when the referral converts within the attribution window and the sale is then approved by the store.
