How to make money from home: 8 realistic side jobs in 2026
Co-founder, sales and customer relations
The short answer
- There are three ways to make money from home: sell your time (freelancing or a remote side job), sell things you have or make, or build something that earns over time – for example affiliate marketing.
- Time pays fastest, but stops when you stop. What you build takes months before it pays anything, but can carry on without you working at the same pace.
- A side job as an employee is the most predictable: a fixed wage, and in Denmark the employer withholds the tax. As a freelancer or affiliate the income is B-income, and you must report it to the tax authority yourself.
- Never pay to get a job, and say no if anyone asks you to receive money or parcels and send them on – serious employers and networks do not charge you for letting you work.
If you want to make money from home, you have three options: you can sell your time (freelance jobs or a part-time job you can do from a home office), you can sell things you have or make, or you can build something that earns over time – for example a site or a channel with affiliate links. The first pays fastest, the last has the highest ceiling. None of them will make you rich next month, but all of them can be fitted around a job, studies or parental leave.
This guide is about side jobs and extra money from home. If you are looking for online business models such as niche sites, dropshipping and your own digital products, we have covered them in make money online. The two guides deliberately overlap a little – but here the starting point is: you have a few hours a week and a computer at home. What makes most sense? We are a Danish company, so where tax rules come in, we describe the Danish ones; check your own country's rules if you live elsewhere.
Important
Our interest in the topic, said out loud
Affilyflow is a Danish affiliate network, so we make money when affiliates do. Affiliate marketing is therefore described in the most detail – but it is not the right choice for everyone, and the other methods are included because they are real.
Overview: 8 ways to make money from home
| Method | What you sell | When the money comes | Suits you if you |
|---|---|---|---|
| Freelancing from a home office | Your time and skills | Weeks | have a skill others pay for |
| Remote side job as an employee | Your time for a fixed wage | First payday | want predictability |
| Affiliate marketing | Recommendations that lead to sales | Months | like writing, filming or testing products |
| Tutoring and online teaching | Your knowledge, hour by hour | Weeks | can explain a subject well |
| Your own digital products | Templates, guides, courses | Months | already have an audience or want to build one |
| Content on social media | Attention and partnerships | Months | are persistent in front of a camera |
| Selling second-hand items | What you no longer use | Days | have a full loft or storeroom |
| User testing and surveys | Your opinion | Days | want small amounts without commitment |
The pattern is the same for all 8: the faster the money comes, the lower the ceiling, and the more the income is tied to the hours you put in. Methods with a high ceiling require a period where you work without getting anything for it. Choose based on what you need: money next month, or an income that can grow.
1. Freelancing from a home office
Freelancing is the fastest route to money from home if you have a skill others pay for: writing, translation, proofreading, graphic design, web development, bookkeeping, video or audio editing. You find the first jobs in your own network, on freelance platforms or by writing directly to businesses you can help. The biggest mistake is pricing too low to get started – it is hard to raise the price with the same clients afterwards.
The downside is that the income stops when you take a break, and that you handle everything around it yourself: quotes, invoicing, follow-up and tax. Many use freelancing as a bridge – it pays the bills while something more scalable is built up on the side.
2. A remote side job as an employee
A side job from home as an employee – customer service, telesales, data entry, moderation or part-time administration – is the most predictable: a fixed hourly wage, no clients to find and no invoices to write. In Denmark the employer withholds the tax, so you do not have to think about paying it yourself. Search the usual job portals for work from home or remote, and read the advert carefully: a real job has a named employer with a company registration number, a contract and a wage – not a start-up fee.
If you already have a full-time job, check your employment contract for rules on secondary employment before you say yes. That applies especially if the side job is close to your main employer's business.
3. Affiliate marketing: earn on your recommendations
Affiliate marketing is the method on the list that can grow without you working more hours. The principle is simple: you recommend products from a web shop via a personal link, and when a reader clicks and buys, you get a commission on the sale. You have no stock, no customer service and no costs to get started – the store only pays once you have created a sale that holds.
What you have to build in return is traffic: a place where people who are considering buying something find your recommendations. It can be a niche site about a topic you know, a blog, a newsletter, a YouTube channel or a social media profile. The link alone sells nothing – the content around it does. The route from account to first link and payout is described step by step in the docs under getting started as an affiliate.
Choose a topic you can keep going with
The best topic is one you know something about and can be bothered to write about for a year, and where people research before they buy: gear for a hobby, children's things, sport, home interiors, software. A topic you are bored with after three weeks will not last, however well it pays.
Create a free account and find programs
An affiliate network gathers many stores in one place, so you can create links, see your numbers and get one combined payout. With us the account is free, and you see each store's commission and rules before you join. See how to become an affiliate.
Write content that helps
Guides, comparisons and honest tests of products you have tried. Content that answers the question the reader has just before buying is what converts. If you want to build a site, we have the whole plan in build an affiliate site.
Label your links as advertising
If you earn commission, the content is advertising – under Danish marketing law, and under similar rules in many other countries – and must be clearly labelled. See ad disclosure for how to do it right in Denmark.
Measure what works
When the first clicks come, look at which pages and links generate sales, and write more of that. EPC – earnings per click is the number that tells you whether a program is worth your time.
What it brings in depends on traffic, topic and the stores' rates – there is no average for affiliates, and we will not invent one. You can, however, do the maths on the mechanics: traffic times the share who click on, times the share who buy, times order value and commission. We have worked through examples in how much does an affiliate site earn. Expect several months before it brings in anything noticeable, especially if the traffic is to come from Google.
Tip
How it works at Affilyflow
The commission rate is locked the moment someone clicks your link, so a later reduction does not affect clicks that have already happened. A sale is pending during the store's approval period (30–90 days, set per program), and approved commission is paid out automatically on the first banking day of the month once the balance is at least DKK 100.
4. Tutoring and online teaching
If you are good at maths, languages, an instrument or a piece of software, you can teach over video. Homework help for school pupils is a classic, but adults also pay to learn Excel, a language before a posting abroad or to play the guitar. You sell hours, so the ceiling is your calendar – but teaching can later become an online course that sells without you being there.
5. Your own digital products
Templates, spreadsheets, e-books, recipe collections, printable planners or short courses: products that take time to make once and cost nothing to sell once more. The hard part is not making the product but finding buyers – that requires an audience. That is why this method is closely linked to 3 and 6: the same blog or channel can sell your own products and recommend other people's.
6. Content on social media
Video on TikTok, Instagram and YouTube can give a faster breakthrough than a blog, because the algorithms show content to people who do not follow you. The money typically comes from brand partnerships, affiliate links and personal discount codes – more rarely from the platforms themselves. We have written a whole guide on it: make money on TikTok and Instagram.
7. Selling second-hand items
The fastest money you can earn from home this week is probably in your wardrobe. Clothes, electronics, furniture, toys and books sell on the well-known marketplaces and in local groups. It is a one-off gain, not an income – but it is a good way to fund the start of something else. If you sell at a profit and on a scale that looks like trading, it is no longer just clearing out, so check the rules – in Denmark on skat.dk.
8. User testing and paid surveys
Companies pay ordinary people to test a website or an app, or to answer questionnaires. It is real and requires no qualifications, but the amounts are small and the tasks come irregularly. Work out the hourly rate before you call it a side job – and be sceptical of sites that promise large amounts for answering questions.
Watch out
How to spot work-from-home scams
You should never pay to get a job, a starter kit or access to tasks. Say no if you are asked to receive money into your account or parcels at your address and send them on – it is a well-known way of exploiting people, and you are the one left with the problem afterwards. Serious employers and networks only make money when you do.
Tax on extra money from home
Everything you earn is taxable – even small amounts. In Denmark, if you are employed in a side job, the employer withholds tax and the labour market contribution. As a freelancer, affiliate or creator, on the other hand, the income is typically B-income: the Danish Tax Agency defines it as income where tax and the labour market contribution have not been withheld, and the responsibility for paying is yours. Enter the expected income on your preliminary income assessment at skat.dk, so you do not end up with back tax.
Whether the activity is a hobby or a business decides how it is taxed, which deductions you have and where the income goes on the annual tax return. If turnover grows past DKK 50,000 in a calendar year, you must also deal with VAT. We have gathered the Danish rules in affiliate income tax and VAT in Denmark – and if you are unsure about your own situation, check skat.dk or ask an accountant. If you are taxed in another country, its own rules apply.

Decide what you need
If the money needs to come next month, choose freelancing, a side job or selling second-hand items. If you want to build something that can grow, choose affiliate marketing, digital products or content – and give it at least six months.
Choose one method, not five
Spreading yourself across many methods is the most common reason nothing comes of any of them. Choose one, and set aside fixed hours for it every week.
Take the first visible step
A profile on a freelance platform, an ad for tutoring, the first article or video. Something other people can find, instead of a plan in a document.
Keep accounts from the first penny
A spreadsheet of income and expenses takes ten minutes to make and saves you a lot of trouble when the tax return comes.
If you choose the affiliate route, the guide to becoming an affiliate is the natural next step – and the program directory shows which stores you can recommend and what they pay.
Frequently asked questions
How can I make money from home?
You can sell your time as a freelancer or in a remote part-time job, sell things you have or make, or build something that earns over time, for example a site or a channel with affiliate links. Time pays fastest, while what you build takes months but can grow without you working more hours.
What is a good side job from home?
The most predictable is a part-time job as an employee, for example remote customer service or administration, where you get a fixed wage and the employer withholds the tax. If you have a professional skill, freelancing typically pays a better hourly rate. If you want to build something that can grow, affiliate marketing and your own digital products are obvious choices.
Can you make extra money from home without experience?
Yes, but the amounts are smaller at first. Selling second-hand items, user testing and surveys require no experience. Affiliate marketing requires no qualifications and is free to start, but you need to learn to create content people find and trust, and that takes time.
Do I have to pay tax on a side job from home?
Yes, on everything you earn. In Denmark, if you are employed, the employer withholds the tax. As a freelancer or affiliate the income is typically B-income, which you must report yourself on the preliminary income assessment and the annual tax return. Check skat.dk for your situation, or your own tax authority if you are taxed elsewhere.
How do I avoid work-from-home scams?
Never pay to get a job, a starter kit or access to tasks, and say no if anyone asks you to receive money or parcels and send them on. A real job has a named employer with a company registration number, a contract and a wage.
Is affiliate marketing a side job?
It can be fitted in like a side job, but it is not a job with a wage. You earn commission on the sales your recommendations create, so the income depends on your traffic and can be zero in the first months. In return, it can grow without you working more hours.
