How to make money online: 8 realistic ways in 2026
Co-founder, sales and customer relations
The short answer
- There are two ways to make money online: sell your time (freelancing) or build something that can sell many times (affiliate content, your own products, a channel). The first pays fastest, the second has the highest ceiling.
- None of the methods that last are passive from day one: they trade working time now for income later, and it typically takes months before the first stable amount.
- Affiliate marketing is the most accessible model for content creators: free to start, no stock, and you earn commission on the sales you create.
- Everything you earn is taxable, and you should never pay for the right to earn money – that is the hallmark of the models to stay away from.
You can make money online by selling your time and skills (freelancing), by selling things, or by building something that earns again and again: content with affiliate links, your own digital products or a social media channel. Freelancing brings in money within weeks. The scalable methods take months, but have a far higher ceiling. This guide goes through 8 methods that actually work – with honest estimates of what they take and where the traps are. We are a Danish company, so where rules matter (tax, ad labelling) we use Denmark as the worked example; the methods themselves work anywhere.
If you are looking for a side job or extra money you can earn from a home office – also as an employee – we have written a separate guide: make money from home. This one is about the online methods, and how to choose between them.
Important
Our interest in the topic, said out loud
Affilyflow is a Danish affiliate network – we make money when affiliates do. Methods 1–3 can be used with us; we do not earn a penny on the rest. The guide covers them anyway, because the right choice depends on you, not on us.
Overview: the 8 methods compared
| Method | Cost to start | Time to first income | Long-term potential |
|---|---|---|---|
| Affiliate marketing via your own channel | Nothing | Months | High – scales with traffic |
| Niche site | Domain and hosting | Many months | High – but needs stamina |
| Content on YouTube and social media | Nothing | Months | High – affiliate links, codes and brand deals |
| Freelancing (writing, design, code) | Nothing | Weeks | Medium – you sell hours |
| Your own digital products | Your time | Months | High – made once, sold many times |
| Web shop and dropshipping | Stock or an ad budget | Months | Medium – margins are squeezed |
| Selling second-hand and reselling | What you already own | Days | Low – good for the first money |
| Paid surveys and micro-tasks | Nothing | Days | Low – small amounts per task |
Notice the pattern: the methods with high potential take months before the first income arrives. The methods with quick money have a low ceiling. There is no method that is fast, big and free at the same time – and anyone selling you one is making money from selling the dream, not from the method.
1. Affiliate marketing: earn on the traffic you create
Affiliate marketing is the most accessible of the big models: you recommend products via your affiliate links, and when a reader buys, you earn a commission. No stock, no customer service, free to start – the store only pays once you have created a sale. In return, you have to build what is worth something yourself: traffic from people who trust your recommendations.
Choose a topic you can keep going with
A topic you actually know something about always beats a 'profitable' topic you are bored with after three weeks. The topic needs products people research before they buy.
Build the channel before the money
Write guides, test products, answer the questions people search for. Traffic comes from being the best answer to the question – not from the links.
Join a network
A network brings programs, tracking and payouts together in one place. See how to become an affiliate, and check the programs before you choose – they need to match your topic.
Label your links
If you earn commission, the content is advertising. In Denmark, the Consumer Ombudsman (Forbrugerombudsmanden) recommends 'Reklamelink' or 'Annoncelink' (ad link) above or right next to the link – see ad disclosure. Disclosure rules differ by country, so check your own.
Measure and optimise on EPC
Once the traffic is there, it is about EPC – earnings per click: move links higher up, swap out weak programs, and write more of what converts.
A worked example shows the mechanics – it is an example, not an average or a promise: if you send 1,000 clicks a month to a store, and 2 % buy for DKK 600 with your commission at 10 %, that is 20 sales at DKK 60 – DKK 1,200 a month and an EPC of DKK 1.20. The numbers swing wildly with topic and season, but the way forward is always the same: more clicks, better conversion or a higher rate. We have worked through what sites can realistically reach in how much does an affiliate site earn.
Tip
How it works at Affilyflow
The account is free, and you see each store's commission and rules before you join. The rate is locked the moment someone clicks your link, and approved commission is paid out automatically on the first banking day of the month once the balance is at least DKK 100.
2. Niche site: a site about one topic
A niche site is affiliate marketing on your own domain: a site about a defined topic that needs to be found on Google. It is the most long-term method on the list – a new site needs many good articles and time before search engines send meaningful traffic. In return, you own the channel yourself, and a good guide can send readers on for years. That is also why niche sites are often mentioned as passive income – but maintenance is part of the price. The full build plan is in build an affiliate site.
3. Content on YouTube and social media
Video and social media are affiliate marketing's second engine: reviews, comparisons and how-to content with links in the description or bio. The algorithms can give a faster breakthrough than a blog, and brand partnerships come on top as the channel grows. Personal discount codes are a strong supplement: with us, a code the store has tied to you earns commission – even when the follower does not click. Remember the rules: in Denmark, commercial content must be labelled "Reklame" (advertising) at the start of the post, and the Danish Consumer Ombudsman's influencer rules apply even to a small audience. We have written a whole guide on how to make money on TikTok and Instagram.
4. Freelancing: sell your time online
Freelancing is the fastest route to your first online income: writing, translation, design, code, video or bookkeeping sold per job. The money comes in weeks, not months – but the income stops when you stop working, because you are selling your time. Many use freelancing as a bridge: it pays the bills while the niche site or channel grows.
5. Your own digital products
E-books, templates, online courses or small tools take months to build and cost nothing to sell one more time. The model requires that you already have an audience or are willing to build one – and that is exactly why it combines so well with affiliate content: the same channel, two incomes.
6–8. The methods to be honest with yourself about
A web shop and dropshipping can work, but are not the shortcut the ads promise: you compete with established stores on ad prices, margins and delivery, and without something unique the maths often ends at zero after ad spend. Selling second-hand clears out the house and brings quick money, but it is a one-off gain. Paid surveys and micro-tasks are real enough, but the amounts are small – work out the hourly rate before you call it an income.
Can you make money online fast?
Yes, but only small amounts. The fastest is to sell something you already have, or take freelance jobs in something you can already do. Anything promising big amounts quickly – courses in quick trading, "systems" costing thousands or schemes where you earn by recruiting others – is either risky or selling the dream. Affiliate marketing is not fast either: it is one of the best long-term methods precisely because it takes time to build the traffic that produces sales.
Watch out
Never pay for the right to earn
The hallmark of the models to avoid: the income comes from recruiting others or from selling you the access – expensive courses, "investment clubs" and programs you have to buy your way into. Serious networks and platforms are free to join, because they only make money when you do.
Tax: the income is taxable
Everything you earn online is taxable income – affiliate commission, freelance fees and sales of your own products, and according to the Danish Tax Agency also free products you receive from brands. In Denmark no tax is withheld before the money reaches you, so it is B-income you must report yourself – ideally on the preliminary income assessment at skat.dk, so you avoid back tax. Whether the activity is a hobby or a business decides deductions and the labour market contribution, and if turnover grows past DKK 50,000 in a calendar year, you must deal with VAT. We have gathered the Danish rules in affiliate income tax and VAT in Denmark – read it before the money comes. If you are taxed elsewhere, the rules differ: check with your own tax authority.
Get started this week
Choose one method – not five
Spreading yourself thin is the most common reason nothing ever comes of it. Choose the method that matches your time and skills, and give it six months.
Put the first content out into the world
An article, a video or a profile on a freelance platform. The first step is always the same: something other people can find.
Get your accounts ready
A spreadsheet of income and expenses from day one. It takes ten minutes now and saves you trouble when the tax return comes.
And one last honest word: most people making money online today started with the same doubts and the same zero on the counter. The difference is rarely talent – it is whether you are still going after six months. If you choose the affiliate route, the guide to getting started is the natural next click. If you are considering Amazon, read Amazon Associates in Denmark first.
Frequently asked questions
How do you make money online?
By selling your time as a freelancer, selling things, or building something that can earn many times: content with affiliate links, a niche site, a social media channel or your own digital products. Freelancing pays fastest; the scalable methods have the highest ceiling.
How fast can you make money online?
Freelancing, selling second-hand and micro-tasks can bring money within days to weeks, because you sell time or things you already have. Methods with high potential – affiliate marketing, niche sites, your own products – typically take months before the income is noticeable, because you first have to build traffic or an audience.
How do you make money online as a beginner?
Start with a method that fits what you can already do. If you have a professional skill, take freelance jobs. If you want to build something, choose a topic you know and create content with affiliate links on a site or a channel. Affiliate marketing requires no qualifications and is free to start, but takes time.
Is affiliate marketing free to start?
Yes. It is free to sign up as an affiliate with serious networks, and you need neither stock nor start-up capital. A niche site requires a domain and hosting, while a channel on YouTube or social media is free.
Do I have to pay tax on what I earn online?
Yes. Affiliate commission, freelance fees, sales of your own products and free products from brands are taxable in Denmark. No tax is withheld in advance, so you must report the income yourself, and with larger activity you must deal with business registration and VAT. Check skat.dk for your situation – or your own tax authority if you are taxed elsewhere.
Do I need a registered business to make money online?
Not to get started in Denmark. You can receive affiliate commission and freelance fees as a private individual and report them yourself. If the activity becomes regular and professional, or turnover approaches the VAT threshold, you must register a business (a CVR number). Talk to an accountant or read the Danish Tax Agency's guidance when in doubt; other countries have their own rules.
Which method pays the most in the long run?
The scalable models: affiliate content and your own digital products, where the same piece of work can earn many times. They do, however, take the longest to get going. Many combine them: freelancing pays the bills now, while the channel and the products are built up on the side.
